Busy, cold, and fun. Those would be the three words that best sum up this past week for me! The spring weather has definitely gone into, hopefully, a temporary, hiding spot. But, like my mom has always told me, “there is no bad weather, just bad clothing.” So, nothing can stop me from having a great week! Here are my 5 favorite moments:
Sunday, April 16th, was Easter! Easter is one of those holidays that is SO commercialized. It is sickening! I always am conscious of remembering WHY we celebrate these holidays and also spending them in a mindful manner. This Easter, in particular, was really cool because my mom and I spent the day cooking up all of the yummy food together. We had my Omi join us from brunch until dinner, and just enjoyed a really nice day with the family. For brunch, my dad and I whipped up some waffles! We ate them with TONS of fruit, pure maple syrup, and, my favorite, Nutella! For our Easter lunch/dinner, my mom and I made a Spinach Zucchini Quiche, with hardboiled eggs for a fun Easter touch. And for our dessert, my mom and I made Mini Baileys Chocolate Cheesecake Trifles and served them with a fresh cup of coffee. Boy, are we lucky to have this much and this great of food…
Easter Monday is a national holiday here in Germany. Yay for another day to sleep in! But really, do homework. It was a rather dreary day, but my mom suggested we go for a walk anyways. The moment we got out to the fields where we go walking, the sun erupted from behind the clouds and made the prettiest designs in the sky. It was so stunning!
Tuesday, the gloominess continued. When I got to campus for class I emerged from the subway station to WHITE ON THE GROUND! Yes friends, SNOW! I was thankful to be able to hunker down in the library and get some work done. My favorite part of the day was that I came up with several cool ideas for various projects I have this semester. Little moments like that just really hammer it home for me, that I am in the right place at this point in my young life. Before I rarely felt inspired and I dreaded studying, that will probably never change!
Thursdays are my days off. These are my days to check things off my to-do list! And today was the perfect example. My favorite part of the day was going to bed feeling accomplished. I got my workout in, my school work done, 3 loads of laundry washed and hung to dry, and a few other pesky to-do’s I had been putting off for a while. There is no better feeling than going to bed feeling accomplished.
Saturday, it was time to get out of the house. The timing could not have been better, as my dear friend Sofie had invited me to join her in watching the Qualifications for the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, here in Stuttgart. We ended up watching several phenomenal matches, up close and personal and getting a bite to eat together. It was so much fun catching up again and spending time together!
Life sure has a funny way of working out. I feel as if a switch has turned throughout this week where I am really ready to take on anything. It feels really good to be full of passion and determination to reach for my big life dreams! And weeks like this are just the baby steps to getting there.
Short weeks before a long weekend often feel like they will never end since there is SO much to do! Last week was one of those weeks, but it was definitely worth it! Here are my 5 favorite moments:
Sunday, my mom and I went for our Sunday morning long walk. It has become a routine for us, which is nice! This week in particular though was nice because you could see all of the leaves bud, hear the birds chirping, and feel the air warming up.
Monday, we finished up a start-up event at school. The previous week we had evaluated all of the issues that we experience at gas stations and tried to brainstorm how we could alleviate some of those issues with a new gadget or piece of technology. This week we focused on building out our idea and then shared it with everyone else at the end. While I am by no means a creative thinker, I enjoyed seeing how quickly some teams were able to come up with incredible ideas.
Thursday’s are my day off of classes! So I started my Thursday morning like any other morning and then headed into Stuttgart to meet my mom. Being that Good Friday is an observed holiday here, we needed to get some groceries, but also used the opportunity to check out the city library. The Stadtbibliothek in Stuttgart is a very interesting building from the architectural aspect. We explored it a little while I searched for a book. It also has an accessible rooftop, which is a great place to see the view from! We ended up getting library cards for the next year. I forsee myself spending a whole lot of time studying away there!
Friday was Good Friday! Like I said, it is a holiday here in Germany, so in typical holiday fashion, I slept in. Even when I woke up, I took it easy and read my book. I greatly enjoy having the time to be able to enjoy a good read.
Saturday, we went exploring! A post will be up about all of the exploring we did later, but my favorite part of the day was spending time with my parents! I feel like so many people in my generation want to travel and explore, but don’t have people to do it with them, let alone support them. I love that my parents are just as curious to go new places as me, that way we all get our fix of seeing cool things together!
Next weekend I will report to you all about my Easter celebrations! But for now, if you celebrated, I hope you had a lovely Easter and a great week!
The second week of April was a good one! There is a lot going on, but having the option to go outside to deflate is awesome, especially now that you don’t even need a jacket! I have been on a roller coaster of emotions and stress, just trying to get my life to be the put together, organized life I envision, which is said so much easier than done! Nonetheless, I had a good week and here are my 5 favorite moments:
Sunday, my mom persuaded me to join her on a 5 mile walk to kick-off the day. As much as I despise her when she suggests it, I am grateful for it because there is nothing better than lounging around on a Sunday knowing you hit your step goal. Plus, we found some lovely gardens that are in full bloom, so that helped too!
Monday, the sun was shining, it was warm and I had class. BUT, turns out I had a long break between classes, so I had enough time to go home and bask in the sun while getting some homework done. It really does not take much to make me a happy camper!
Thursday, organization was my middle name. Now that I have a few weeks of school under my belt, I figured it was time to get organized. I also tackled my vanity and tackled my overflowing skincare samples, nail polishes, and hair products. It felt good to not have that little to-do gently nagging me while I tried to get school work done!
Saturday, we went to visit my great aunt and uncle! We enjoyed a lovely afternoon sitting on their terrace, eating delicious food and chatting about all sorts of things. It is so fun seeing my grandma and her sister laugh about old memories and listen to the stories I have to tell! And there was still warm homemade apple strudel with ice cream… that alone has my heart!
My last favorite moment regards every day of this past week. I made my workouts and nutrition a priority this week and got my workout in every day before leaving for class. I typically find excuses, but this week I did not let myself and I feel amazing for it!
And another week has come to a close, but another new one lays before me. Let’s see what I get into this week as Easter approaches! I hope you all have a lovely week too!
March came to a close and April started fittingly, with some April showers! This past week I started to feel somewhat at peace with all of the newness in my life. Routines exist, although rough around the edges, and I’m feeling good. It’s been a very long transitional period, but so far it’s been worth it. Here are my 5 favorite moments from last week:
Sundays are my day to recharge. This week, in particular, I stayed in my pajamas as long as possible! One thing I enjoy doing over the weekend is baking. It usually doesn’t feel like work to me and the result of my baking is usually a comfortable tea time enjoying the still warm baked goods. Today, I made blueberry peach cobbler! We brought it over to my Omi’s and cleaned out the whole pan, it was so delicious and refreshing.
Monday, I met up with my friend Carla to shoot some photos for our respective blogs. We spent the afternoon chatting away and taking photos in the heart of Stuttgart. Check out my post about it here!
Wednesday I surprised myself. Fitness has become a big part of my life, but that doesn’t mean I always have motivation. I actually struggle to mentally make myself do a workout! But today I had a break between classes. Not a long one at all, but I knew my workout had to get done one way or another. So I pushed past all of my excuses and got in a solid workout before heading back to school.
Friday, the weather was fantastic. Sunny, warm, and perfect to meet up with a friend for coffee. Keelie and I met earlier in the week and just got along great! We spent some time at the Schloßplatz in Stuttgart before heading out separate ways for the rest of the day. It was also my parents 22nd wedding anniversary, so we celebrated with take-out from our local Italian restaurant.
Saturday, I spent the day getting some to-dos done before heading out for the evening. I met up with Carla and Keelie to crack open a bottle of wine at the Schloßplatz before we stopped at a few other bars and shared many great laughs. It was a much-needed girls night and we had a blast.
It was a great week full of little successes. I finally feel like I am moving forward, at a snails pace, and that one day I’ll reach all of my big goals!
Life gets busy, challenging, and exciting every once and a while. Those are the 3 words I would use to explain my life since the beginning of February. I have been juggling a lot, whether in my head or in everyday life. And I just tried to power through these last weeks and just make everything happen at once, but it just did not work. One week my blog/social media and workout game was strong, the next week my workout and general life game was strong, but never my 3 core elements at once.
That being said, I appreciate your patience with me and my lack of having everything together. I have been putting a lot of pressure on myself, but am starting to feel good in my new routine. Especially with spring FINALLY blooming I am finding myself excited and inspired to produce some fun content! So, thank you for sticking with me and here are my 5 favorite moments from the past 2 weeks! 🙂
March 12, 2017 to March 18, 2017
Sunday, March 12th. Even though I was tuckered out and sick, I had to take advantage of the sunshine. My mom and I hopped on our bikes and rode a few miles to visit my Omi. It was so nice to feel the sunshine!
Monday, March 13th. It was officially time to kick off my new adventure at the Hochschule der Medien in Stuttgart! We had our official greeting Monday morning along with a little run down of all of the orientation activities to come.
Tuesday, March 14th. The first days of the semester I actually did not have class! This was a blessing because I was able to sleep, read, and get my cold out of my system.
Thursday, March 16th. Today was the first day of class! General business was the class of the day, nothing too overly exciting. The best part was that since my school is so close to my moms work that I could stop by and catch a ride home with her.
Saturday, March 18th. My dad is a musician and plays in a local orchestra! Today was one of their big concerts! My mom and I went to watch him and it was a really fun evening!
March 19, 2017 to March 25, 2017
Monday, March 2oth. Jonathan has been lucky to have recieved a scholarship for a conference in NEW ZEALAND in February 2018! Obviously I want to join him and today was registration day! We can now look forward to traveling together to a crazy cool place! 🙂
Tuesday, March 21st. Today I started a new workout program, Insanity Max 30. It is SO tough, but I love it!
Wednesday, March 22nd. It was a really long day of class, but it ended with a great conversation about what credits will transfer from my prior university. It is great knowing that my previous studies were not all for nothing!
Friday, March 24th. Today I had the day off. I spent the day being pretty lazy, but finally got myself to workout and then went on a nice walk with my mom!
Saturday, March 25th. A huge perk of living in this area of Germany is that we have family near by. Today we got together for breakfast with my Aunt Norma. Not only was it delicious, but we had a wonderful time chatting.
Things have not been consistent whatsoever, but that is what keeps life interesting! The weather has been so beautiful and it makes me so excited to get out there and explore! Stay tuned to see what I get up too!
First off, my apologies for this post being live late. This past week was great, but I ended up getting sick and needing some time to just recharge. Otherwise, the first full week of March left me filled with excitement for not only the rest of the month but for my study program, business opportunities, and life! Here are my 5 favorite moments:
As per usual, I started the week off with a nice long Sunday walk. My dad had a rehearsal weekend for his orchestra, so it was just my mom, Tobi, and I. We both hit our step goals before even finishing the walk! The sun was shining, the air was mild, and it just felt like spring. How much better can it get?
Tuesday came the day I had been waiting for since August – haircut time! I always have confidence that I will find a great hairdresser in Michigan, but each time I end up unhappy. In August I let the person doing my hair thin it with a razor and that was a HUGE mistake that I have since been trying to salvage. Tuesday I finally was back in the trusty chair of my German hairdresser. My hair is not much different, but I feel confident and fresh again!
Wednesday was wild. After weeks of excitement building up, it was time to meet everyone I am now going to college with! We headed off on a kick-off retreat to get to know each other, a few of our professors, and the program. Wednesday, in particular, was crazy. Not even an hour after we met one another we were given a task to organize the rest of the day, including dinner, entertainment, and decor. My triumph of the day was baking apple cake (for the first time ever) for 30+ people, who I barely knew and they LOVED it. The rest of the evening also went wonderfully, what a great way to get to know everyone’s competencies right off the bat!
Thursday was much more informative. After a fun night, we spent the day learning about our study program. While it was utterly overwhelming, my excitement for the program grew much more and I got the feeling of being in the right spot.
Friday, I came home. It was cool staying in a little castle with people I didn’t even know before Wednesday for a few nights, but it was cold, I missed my food, and my comfort. My favorite part of the day was definitely getting to take a hot shower and sinking into my cozy bed.
The week was really great. I met a lot of wonderful people who I look forward to getting to know better in the coming years! It has been a long time since I have felt like I am in the right spot. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me!
February has come to a close and with that, we are just days away from the first day of spring! The snow is long gone here in Germany, but it’s still pretty gray outside. Time for buds, blooms, and beauty! This past week was another relaxed one in the life of Lena Marie, but a good one. Here are my 5 favorite moments:
Sunday, we were graced with a lovely sunny day. After a slow start to the day my parents, pup, and I took a long afternoon walk to soak up the sun. Being able to do this without looking like the Michelin man was a pleasant surprise.
Wednesday, I came to a realization. I have been on top of my health game lately, but still totally struggle when it comes to chocolate. So on Wednesday while I was eating my 3rd piece of chocolate covered marzipan I decided sweets were a no go for the rest of Lent. The purpose of Lent is to give up something that is a struggle for you and this is a big one. Having the awareness and strength to make this choice is why it makes my favorite moments.
Thursday, I met up with one of my dearest German friends, Sofie! We went out to dinner, watched Germany’s Next Topmodel, and started planning an exciting trip we are taking together this summer. People like her are the one’s who’ve made living in Germany much more fun 🙂
Friday, I accompanied my Omi on a little outing to find new shoes in Stuttgart! Omi is a curious, put together, critical woman, who at age 87, still manages to live largely on her own. While my parents, in particular, support her a lot I sure hope to be as fit as her in my 80’s all be it a little less critical 😉
Saturday, my mom and I had a fun girls day, as my dad had a rehearsal weekend for his orchestra. The highlight of the day was getting mini makeovers together and getting some new makeup products. We had nowhere fun and fancy to go to show off our pretty selves, so grocery shopping and errand running it was 🙂 But hanging out with mom is always a blast!
It was another easy week in the book of Lena Marie’s life, but with the new month, the new adventures are finally within grasp. I look forward to taking you all with me 🙂
How almost 2 weeks have passed since returning to Germany, is mindblowing to me. Slowly but surely, everything is coming together and my excitement for my new school is growing. A week ago I moved back into my parents apartment and this past week I spent a lot of time making it feel like home. Other than that, here are my 5 favorite moments:
Sunday, we went out for a lovely family dinner at a small restaurant in a neighboring village. After dinner, my mom and I decided to walk back home instead of drive home with my dad. We both have the Fitbit Charge 2 and wanted to get our steps in! We caught a beautiful sunset and it was so fun hanging out with my mom again after so long.
Wednesday and Thursday, my dad helped me make my room my own again. He made me a new desk, mounted to doors to my closet, hang my mirror and shelf and just made sure it felt like home. I am so lucky to have such a handy dad who is always willing to help me!
Thursday, I posted a life update which took a lot of courage to post. The response to it was so supportive, but also eye-opening since it prompted a few people to share their stories with me. I feel really lucky to have this super tiny, but wonderful, platform where I can share vulnerable moments, but also inspire other to be ok with their own vulnerable situations.
Friday, I had a lovely, impromptu, evening with my Aunt Norma! She lives right around the corner from my Omi and so after visiting my Omi, I figured I would see if my aunt was home, which she was. We ended up chatting for a very long time over glasses of wine and playing catch-up from the last 8 months. It was a lovely way to start my weekend.
Saturday, I woke up to my mom readying herself to go into town. I quickly got ready too and joined her to run some errands. It was sunny and surprisingly mild and the town was full of people getting their weekly shopping done. We stopped at a few of our favorite shops, I had a fresh croissant and we stocked up on veggies. It was a wonderful and productive sunny Saturday morning.
The last few days of February are upon us, so make them great! And have a great start to March 🙂
Last Sunday I woke up alongside Jonathan in Michigan, this weekend I woke up alone in Germany. This was the week of change. If you have not already, be sure to check out my post about change I wrote earlier this week! Even though this week was difficult, I still have 5 favorite moments!
Sunday was bittersweet. I spent the day packing and lounging with Jonathan. The best part came Sunday evening, though. Jonathan’s mom invited us over for dinner and she made us a feast! Ribeye, potatoes, salad, and a scrumptious chocolate cake for dessert. All in honor of my goodbye 🙁 It was so sad saying goodbye, but it is lovely knowing people care about me and look forward to my return.
Monday was so hard. My favorite moment of the day was Jonathan and my goodbye. You may be like whaaaat? But seriously. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” Good old Winnie the Pooh hit the nail on the head. I may have had tears streaming down my face, but knowing Jonathan will be there when I come back means the world.
Tuesday, I arrived in Germany. After long flights and airport stress, everything was worth it when I saw my parents and Tobi waiting for me. It had been 8 months since I had seen them last. We are such a tight family that I was really excited to be able to give them hugs and cuddle with Tobi. They’re the best ever.
Friday, I finally felt semi-human again. The jet lag was real and it is always worse for me when I jump forward in time! Flying back to Michigan is never an issue. Anyhow, I made it a priority to get back into the workout game and get dressed in real clothes. In the afternoon my mom and I took on the challenge of grocery shopping. She and I love laughing together, so it was so fun to be able to do that again after so long!
Saturday, I closed another chapter. I moved out of my first ever apartment. To celebrate the new beginnings coming soon, we cracked open a bottle of champagne that my dad got my mom for their 21st wedding anniversary. A 1995 Eric Rodez Champagne! I am no champagne connoisseur, but boy was it good. Cheers to a new chapter!
All in all this week went well, especially for the circumstances. I have 2 more weeks of no commitments and then school. So, for now, I plan on soaking up the free time, reading good books and taking things a day at a time. I plan on working on my blog and getting more consistent too, so I cannot wait to see what you think!
The last week in Michigan that is. As I write this I am sitting surrounded by piles of my things that are waiting to be packed away. I am feeling all of the emotions right now. Excitement, fear, anxiety, happiness, you name it. Nonetheless, this past week was a good one to leave my time in Michigan off on. My 5 favorite moments of the week were:
Sunday we were eager to get outside and do some tastings on Old Mission Peninsula. Things did not go as planned so we ended up heading to downtown Traverse City where we stopped for lunch and found a new favorite spot. Peace, Love and Little Donuts of Traverse City is a delectable new spot in Traverse City for all those with an extreme sweet tooth. We took home a box of 6 little donuts and killed the box within 5 minutes. Our favorite one was the “Snick Jagger”, snickers + donuts = happiness. Meanwhile you may want to ditch your diet for the day…
Tuesday was a nice day because I mixed work and play. And by play I mean reading a book… I took the time to relax a bit and read my new book, #GIRLBOSS, by Sophia Amoruso. I still had a lot to get done for work, but relaxing was well worth it.
Thursday I finished up a lot of different work projects and finished off the evening with dinner with Jon’s dad, dad’s girlfriend, brother and Jonathan for a goodbye celebration. We tried out West End Tavern for the first time. We had a variation of burgers and wood fired pizzas and all left with full and happy bellies. It did not hurt that they also played a great selection of music.
Friday was perfect. Jonathan has an internship coming up near Grand Rapids, Michigan at Riveridge Produce. We drove down to tour the farm and for Jonathan to get a clearer picture of what his duties would be. Not only did he leave super excited for his internship, but we made a fun road trip out of it. We picked up M22 in Manistee and stopped at various beautiful places on our way home. There were even people surfing! Although we love adrenaline rushes, surfing was a little out there for us, so we stuck to walking along the beach and laughing the day away.
Saturday capped the week off in the best way possible. We met up with my family and went to various popular Traverse City food and beverage destinations: Right Brain Brewery, Traverse City Whiskey Company, PepeNero, Pleasanton Bakery, and Left Foot Charley. All of these places were awesome, the food and drinks were amazing, and spending the day with family was just what I needed. I will miss them dearly, however plans are already in the works for the next trip…
Waking up this morning, I still could not believe that I leave tomorrow, however this past week was great. It is time to get packing and spend as much time with Jonathan as I can. I hope your week was wonderful as well.
